Red Rocket Ale – Bear Republic Brewing Co.
Posted in Beer, Findings and Tastings on June 18, 2012 by Michael Stewart
Red Rocket Ale is a Scottish Red Ale, 6.8 % ABV.
Appearance: Pours a dark copper. Three-finger beige colored head that is foamy on top and bubbly in the middle. Head has excellent retention and almost never fades. Lacing sticks to the sides of the glass very well.
Smell: Predominantly malty, but has a solid hop kick. Malts are sweet with hints of caramel and hops are mostly grassy.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with medium carbonation.
Taste: Almost reversed from the smell. Hops almost overtake malts but remain in balance. Sweet bready malts up front that fade to an aggressive hop kick. Hops are grassy and piney. Some strong herbal and floral notes from the hops. Finish is dry and bitter.
Overall: This beer was a surprise in every aspect for me. I have been a little underwhelmed by some of the other Bear Republic beers I’ve had, but this one was completely different. Every part of this beer was great, from the appearance to the taste. The brewers call it a Scottish Red, but to me its more of a malty West Coast red ale. Value-wise, this beer is top notch. I paid less than four dollars for this beer and I was blown away for how big it was.
