Dexter – “Swim Deep” Review [Warning: Spoilers]

Don’t worry, Masuka; you’re still my bro.

Following a phenomenal episode last week, our favorite serial killer is back this week with the fifth installment of Dexter: Season 7.

This episode truly commenced the cat-and-mouse game between Dexter and Isaak, and if “Swim Deep” was any indication, this is going to lead to one hell of a rivalry. In the episode, Dex and Isaak both attempt to outsmart one another, with our protagonist getting the last laugh (for now) after baiting Isaak into gang territory which leads to his arrest. The breakdown of that crime scene was great, and it really builds Isaak’s character as a Terminator-esque killing machine. The episode ends with Isaak behind bars, but as he swears to Dexter, it isn’t over.

We also find out that Hannah is more of a killer than she led herself to be to the Miami Metro Police. Dexter, always full of wit, realizes this before anyone else, but for some reason withholds this information from Deb towards the end of the episode. Will this be a chance for Dex to get close to Hannah on a killer-to-killer basis, or does Hannah’s knowledge of what Dexter knows about her give her incentive to emerge as a second villain in this season? We’ll have to wait and see.

As LaGuerta gets deeper and deeper in the evidence of the Ice Truck Killer case, Deb is having to try her hardest to save Dexter’s butt from LaGuerta discovering the real truth. This leads to a great scene where Deb has to lie to Batista, basically showing that she’s becoming exactly what she despised about LaGuerta when she was in that position.

“Swim Deep” was an overall excellent episode and keeps Dexter: Season 7 at its fast-paced roll. Isaak vs. Dexter is building up to be something great, and the sky’s the limit for the role Hannah will play in all of this.
